What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of healing arts, and as a science is based on the premise that good health, depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system. Human body structures such as cells and organs function by impulses carried through nerves. When these nerve impulses travel uninterrupted, the organs and cells of the body are able to function normally. When there is interference in the nerve supply, the organs and cells cannot function properly and a state of malfunction or a disease state may begin. The spinal cord has 31 pairs of spinal nerves, which exit from the spinal column (or backbone). Although the spine offers support and protection for these nerves, it can become misaligned and cause interference with the flow of nerve impulses. These misalignments are referred to in chiropractic as subluxations, and are corrected with adjustments administered by Doctors of Chiropractic.
Chiropractic teaches that within the body there is a tendency to try to maintain a state of good health. This innate intelligence works in your body all the time, even when you are not aware of it. We do not tell ourselves to breathe, our hearts to beat, or our digestive system to function; because our body has an inborn ability to function on its own provided there is no interference.
Primary treatment by a Doctor of Chiropractic is specific spinal manipulation or "adjustment". The adjustment is designed to remove the interference from the nerve impulses. The adjustment is given by hand utilizing a specialized technique to the areas of the spine which are out of proper alignment or that do not move properly within their normal range of motion. Doctors of Chiropractic are not only trained in problems dealing with the spine but are formerly educated in clinical examination and diagnosis of the entire human body. Doctors of Chiropractic have training comparable to medical or osteopathic doctors in the basic sciences, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, etc... Your body is controlled by three distinct nervous systems- the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and autonomic nervous system. All 3 parts of the nervous system must be balanced so that they can operate in unity and create a truly healthy body.
